Ben Humble was born in Dumbarton in 1903, one of the sons of the manager of Dennystown Forge. Despite his total deafness he became a dentist, later making advances in forensic dentistry. His deafness made Bennie, as he was known, slightly crusty with people. A published, unflattering photograph called the Humble Kipper, showing him at breakfast, caused him not to speak to the photographer for 10 years. Wikipedia
