C. David Welch is the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs of the United States. He served from 2001 to 2005 as the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt. Welch was born in Munich in 1953. He studied at the London School of Economics in 1973 and '74, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University (1975).
