I study microbes (their ecology, physiology and interactions) in natural and extreme environments. These environments include forest soils, peat bogs, hotsprings (Yellowstone) and deep-sea hydrothermal vents (Mid-Atlantic Ridge). I look at topics such as specific physiologies (enzymens involved in methane oxidation), population biogeography, transmission of microbes and ecology.
