James "Fly" Williams James "Fly" Williams was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City, in 1953, and attended Madison High School, in Brooklyn, New York. His initial interest in sports was in baseball. He was a pitcher, but was advised that he had become too tall to remain competitive in baseball.
