Francisco Javier Varela García was a Chilean biologist, philosopher and neuroscientist who, together with his teacher Humberto Maturana, is best known for introducing the concept of autopoiesis to biology. Francisco Varela died on May 28 at his home in Paris. According to his friend and collaborator Evan Thompson " I am told he died completely calm and at peace.
