Gary D. Schmidt (born 1957) is an American children's writer of nonfiction books as well as some novels, the most notable being "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy", winner of the 2005 Newbery Honor citation, and "First Boy". He lives on a farm in Alto, Michigan, and is a Professor of English at Calvin College. His most recent novel as of May 2007, "The Wednesday Wars", has generated significant buzz in the literary world. Wikipedia
