Georg Christoph Lichtenberg was an 18th-century German scientist, satirist and Anglophile. As a scientist, he was the first to hold a professorship explicitly dedicated to experimental physics in Germany. Today he is remembered for his notebooks published posthumously, which he himself called "waste books", using the English bookkeeping term. Lichtenberg is the inventor of the German "Aphorismus".
