Heinrich Schenker was a music theorist, best known for his approach to musical analysis, now usually called Schenkerian analysis. Schenker was born in Wisniowczyki in Galicia in Austria-Hungary. His musical talent was recognized early on, and at the age of 13 he was sent to study with Carl Mikuli, a student of Frédéric Chopin, in Lemberg (now Lwów).
