Howard Green Duff was a radio and stage performer before he began appearing in films in the late 1940s. He played Dashiell Hammett's private eye Sam Spade while a radio actor. Duff starred in "The Adventures of Sam Spade" on three different networks - ABC, CBS and NBC - from 1946 to 1950. In 1951 Steve Dunne took over the role of Sam Spade.
