Jaroslav Jan Pelikan was one of the world's leading scholars in the history of Christianity and medieval intellectual history. Pelikan was born in Akron, Ohio to a Slovak father and a Serbian mother. His father was a Lutheran pastor and his paternal grandfather a bishop of the Slovak Lutheran Church in America.
