Jernej Kopitar (born 21 August 1780 in Repnje, died 11 August 1844 in Vienna) was a Slovenian linguist. After graduating from a gymnasium in Ljubljana, he became a home teacher in Sigmund Zois' house. In 1808 he moved to Vienna, where he studied law and worked on Slavic languages.
