Joseph Dwight Newman (7 September 1922-4 July 1992) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator, best known for his time with Count Basie. Newman was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to a musical family, having his first music lessons from David Jones. He attended Alabama State College, where he joined the college band, became its leader, and took it on tour.
