John Africa was the founder of MOVE, a militant communal and political organization prominent in the United States in the early 1970s. He died on May 13, 1985, along with several of his armed followers, when the Philadelphia Police Department bombed the MOVE headquarters (a rowhouse in an impoverished West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania neighborhood) after an attempted code enforcement and eviction escalated into a firefight.
