John Sassamon was a Wampanoag Indian born in Massachusetts during the earlier part of the 17th century. His parents died in the smallpox outbreak of 1633, and it is very likely that he was subsequently adopted by a Puritan family which is where he learned to speak English and was converted to Christianity.
