John Sergeant was born at Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire, in 1623, and died in 1707 or 1710. He was son of William Sergeant, a yeoman, and was educated as a sub-sizar at St John's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1642 or 1643. He was appointed secretary to Anglican Bishop Morton of Durham but converted to catholicism as result of his further studies. He subsequently moved to the English College in Lisbon. He studied theology and in 1650 was ordained as a Catholic priest. Wikipedia
