Joseph Lelyveld (born April 5, 1937) was executive editor of the "New York Times" from 1994 to 2001 and is a Pulitzer Prize-wining journalist and author. In all, Lelyveld worked at the "Times" for nearly 40 years, starting out in 1960 as a copy editor and becoming a foreign correspondent within three years. He was replaced by Howell Raines, who resigned in 2003 because of the scandal surrounding the activities of Jayson Blair, a reporter on the National desk. Wikipedia
