Joseph Woodland is best known as the inventor of the barcode, for which he received US Patent 2,612,994 in October of 1952. He worked for The Manhattan Project before joining IBM. In 1993 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology from President George H. W. Bush. Woodland has a bachelors degree from Drexel University and a masters degree from Syracuse University.
