Lewis Hyde , a MacArthur fellow, is a writer, editor, translator, and poet. His numerous books include "The Gift: Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property, "an investigation into art and the economies of gift exchange, and "Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth and Art," which explores the "trickster" character who appears in the traditions and myths of many cultures.
