Lillian Nordica (1857-1914), American operatic soprano, nee Norton, was born in a small farmhouse built by her grandfather on a hill just outside Farmington, Maine. The Nordica pseudonym was bestowed by an Italian "maestro" at the beginning of her operatic career. He convinced her that Europeans would not tolerate an American name on the stage. Wikipedia
