Michael Jerome Gillis was born in Walpole, Massachusetts, in 1949. In 1969 he attended Woodstock. In 1971, he earned a bachelor's degree in history from St. Bonaventure University in western New York. To avoid being drafted he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1972. Based in Thailand, he served as a Lieutenant on a B-52 where he acted as a navigator and bombardier during numerous missions over Vietnam. In 1976 he received an honorable discharge. Wikipedia
