Miller Puckette received his B.S. in mathematics from MIT in 1980. As an undergraduate he was the top scorer in the 1979-1980 William Lowell Putnam mathematics competition. He was awarded Putnam and NSF fellowships for graduate study at Harvard, where he finished his Ph.D. in 1986. From 1979 through 1986 Puckette also studied computer music at the MIT Media Lab, specializing in real-time techniques for live music performance. music.columbia.edu
