Roger Eugene Maris (September 10 1934 - December 14 1985) was an American right fielder in Major League Baseball who is primarily remembered for breaking Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record in 1961 on the last day of the season. 37 years later, in the 1998 season, Mark McGwire broke his major league record by hitting 70.
