Rabbi Sherwin Theodore Wine (b. January 25, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan), founded the Birmingham Temple, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism, which is now in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, in 1963. In 1969 he founded the Society for Humanistic Judaism and has since been the founder of other organizations that espouse and promote Humanistic Judaism, which is also called Secular Humanistic Judaism.
