Sofia Rotaru is a Soviet / Ukrainian singer from an ethnic Moldovan family. She has sung songs in Russian, Ukrainian and Romanian languages, which were equally popular throughout the Soviet Union (e.g. such superhits as "Chervona ruta" (Червона рута) in Ukrainian, "Романтикэ" (Romantika), in Moldavian).
