Sir Sydney Alfred Smith, one of the renowned forensic scientist, was born at Roxburgh, Otago, in New Zealand, on August 4, 1883. He was educated at Roxburgh public school, then at Victoria College, Wellington. Later he went to Edinburgh University where he won a Vans Dunlop scholarship in botany and zoology which supported him to the extent of £300 spread over three years.
