Tom Thayer retired from the Bears in 1992 after a distinguished 8-year career at offensive guard. He was originally a Bears' fourth-round draft pick in 1983 after an all-American career at Notre Dame as one of the team's strongest players. Thayer earned his starting role at right guard four games into the 1985 season, and eventually compiled consecutive game and consecutive start streaks that led the Bears during the late 1980s. ncsasports.org
