Vicente Ramón Guerrero Saldaña was one of the leaders of Mexico's struggle for independence from Spain and an early President of Mexico. He was born in the town of Tixtla, some 100 km inland from the port of Acapulco, in the Sierra Madre del Sur. He was from a poor zambo (mixed Amerindian, Spanish, and African descent) family.
