Walter Cushard Johnston was oldest of three children born to Walter William and Dorothy Cushard Johnston in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, December 16, 1922. Walter graduated from Clearfield Senior High School in 1941, and joined the Navy on April 21, 1943, receiving boot training at Camp Dewey at the Great Lakes Training Base, Illinois. armed-guard
