Spock Power (click to see leaderboard)
Spock Power is a measure of how much influence you have on Spock each time you vote or contribute content. The higher your Spock Power, the greater your ability to influence search results on Spock.
Why did Spock create Spock Power?
Spock Power was created to encourage users to make relevant and engaging contributions and to discourage spam and inappropriate behavior.
What does a higher Spock Power allow me to do?
A higher Spock Power means several things. First, when you vote on or add tags, your contributions will have a larger impact on how Spock generates search results. Second, information you add to Spock will be less likely to be voted down. Third the content you contribute and vote on will be displayed more prominently within a search result page.
What determines my Spock Power?
Spock Power is a combination of a variety of factors, but it can be summarized into two components. The first is a measure of how likely it is that your votes and contributions to Spock are accurate and appropriate. The second is a measure of the quantity of your contributions, and how engaging they are to community.
What Contributions are measured?
Spock Power takes into account three types of contributions:
- Raw Contributions are a measure of how many tags, pictures, links and relationships you have added on Spock. In short, the more content you add to Spock, the higher your Spock Power.
- Community Feedback is a measure of how often the Spock community votes on or flags your contributions. If the community agrees with your contributions, your Spock Power will go up significantly.
- Invites increase your Spock Power. When people you invite join and add relevant content to Spock, your Spock Power goes even higher. Inviting great contributors to Spock is the fastest way to increase your Spock Power.
What can I do to increase my Spock Power?
There’s no one thing that will get you to the top of the Spock Power Leaderboard, but here are some suggestions:
- Add factual, relevant, and engaging information about people on Spock
- Try to vote accurately and often on information you see about people
- Flag items you find that are not consistent with Spock’s Community Guidelines
- Invite people to Spock that you know will add value to the community
Can my Spock Power go down?
If the information you add is not valuable or accurate and is frequently voted down by valued Spock users, your Spock Power will decrease. If your Spock Power decreases to 0, your prior votes on Spock will be removed and you will not be able to add information to Spock until you change your behavior by voting accurately and correctly. Thus, some of the good votes you do when your Spock Power is 0 will not show up, but will help us determine that you are doing good behavior and to increase your power.
Will the formula for Spock Power ever change?
Maybe. Hopefully the formula is perfect and we will never have to change it, but chances are it’s not. As we learn more about how to identify and reward good behaviors and discourage bad behavior, we may need to tweak the formula a little. Don’t worry, if we do change the formula we will make sure to post any changes to our blog.
