Robert Esmie (born July 5, 1972) is a Canadian athlete, winner of the gold medal in the 4x100 m relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Born in Jamaica and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Esmie formed along with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey the world's best 4x100 m relay team in the mid-1990s. Esmie was seventh in 100 m and won a bronze medal in 4x100 m relay at the 1993 World Championships.

Ludmila Engquist (born April 21, 1964 in Tambov Oblast, Russia) is a Swedish athlete who won gold medals in 100m hurdles at the 1991 World Championships (for the Soviet Union under the name Ludmila Narozhilenko) and 1997 World Championships as well as the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. For her 1997 victory in Athens, Engquist received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal, the first non-native Swede to win the honor.

Davidson Ezinwa (born November 22, 1971) is a former sprinter from Nigeria. He won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships, both in 4 x 100 metres relay. He also won a 60 metres silver medal at the 1997 World Indoor Championships. In 100 metres his personal best time is 9.94 seconds, although he has recorded 9.91 s, albeit with a doubtful wind reading of -2.3 m/s which is an unlikely weather condition for records.

Brian M. Lewis (born December 5, 1974) is an American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4x100 m relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Sacramento, California, Brian Lewis played baseball (his father and uncle had played professional baseball) through his ninth grade, but moved then to athletics, because he didn't want his father to coach him. Lewis was the member of American 4x100 m relay team, that did not finish its heat at the 1997 World Championships.

Maria Manuela Machado (born August 9, 1963 in Viana do Castelo) is a former Portuguese long-distance runner, who was particularly successful when running the marathon. Unlike many other marathoners, she did not focus on running city marathons that would have earned her lots of money. Instead, she participated in major competitions (which were less monetarily profitable). Machado participated in the marathon in every major competition between 1990 and 2000.

Nyariki is married to Jackline Maranga. Nyariki represents the Kisii people, which is not famous for producing many world-class athletes.

- Davis Kamoga
Davis Kamoga (born July 17, 1968) is a Ugandan athlete competing in 400 m. He won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1997 he won the first Ugandan medal at the World Championships, a silver medal in the 1997 World Championships in Athens in a personal best time of 44.43 seconds. This is the national record, and ranks him fourth in Africa, behind Innocent Egbunike, Samson Kitur and Charles Gitonga.

Aliecer Urrutia (born September 22, 1974) is a former triple jumper from Cuba. Having set a personal best of 17.70 in 1996, he won a silver medal at the 1997 IAAF World Indoor Championships and a bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships. He shares the men's world indoor record with Christian Olsson of Sweden with a mark of 17.83 metres. He retired after the 2002 season.
- Ken Harnden
Ken Harnden (born 31 March 1973 in Harare) is a Zimbabwean hurdler who specialized in the 400 metres hurdles. His personal best time is 48.05 seconds, achieved in July 1998 in Paris. Together with Tawanda Chiwira, Phillip Mukomana and Savieri Ngidhi he holds the Zimbabwean record in 4 x 400 metres relay with 3:00.79 minutes, achieved during the heats at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. Currently coaching for the Florida State's Men's Track Team.
- Maurice Wignall
Maurice Wignall (born April 17, 1976) is a Jamaican hurdling athlete. His first appearance in a major international championship was at the 1997 World Championships, where he competed in the long jump competition without reaching the final. He jumped 8.09, which still stands as his personal best. Wignall's success in hurdling came relatively late. He took his first medal, a bronze medal, at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Joey Woody (b. May 22, 1973 in Iowa City, Iowa) is an American track and field athlete in the 400 meter hurdles event. Woody attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he was the 1997 NCAA champion in the 400 m hurdles. Woody placed third in the American championships and qualified for the 1997 World Championships in Athens. In the 1999 World Championships in Seville, he improved to sixth place.

Nezha Bidouane (born September 18, 1969) is a retired Moroccan hurdler. She won the 400 m hurdles gold medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. In 1999 she won the silver medal at the World Championships in an African record time of 52.90 seconds. In 2000 she won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games. She is married to Abdelaziz Sahere.

Rodica Mateescu (born Rodica Petrescu on March 13, 1971 in Bucharest) is a former triple jumper from Romania. Having set a personal best of 15.16 in 1997, she placed fourth at the 1997 IAAF World Indoor Championships and won a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships. The same year she placed third at the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka. Mateescu is married to hurdler Mugur Mateescu.

Vladimir Dubrovshchik (born January 7, 1972 in Grodno) is a former Belarusian discus thrower who won the Olympic silver medal in 1996. He is also the 1994 European champion and 1995 World Championships silver medallist, and he finished fourth at the 1997 World Championships. In 2000 he set his personal best throw with 69.28 metres. He retired after the 2001 season.
- Tawanda Chiwira
Tawanda Chiwira (born 27 August 1974) is a Zimbabwean sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. Chiwira finished seventh in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1997 World Championships, together with teammates Phillip Mukomana, Savieri Ngidhi and Ken Harnden. The team set a Zimbabwean record of 3:00.79 minutes during the heats.

Steinar Hoen is a retired Norwegian high jumper. He represented IK Tjalve during his senior career. Pål Arne Fagernes was a Norwegian javelin thrower. He represented Asker SK and IK Tjalve during his active career. As a junior, Fagernes competed on top national level both in cycling, athletics and cross country skiing. He made his international athletics debut at the 1994 European Cup, and competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1997 World Championships and 1998 European Championships without reaching the final rounds.
- Eric Nkansah
Eric Nkansah (born December 12, 1974) is a Ghanaian athlete specializing in the 100 metres. He is one of the current national record holders in 4 x 100 m relay with 38,12 seconds, achieved at the 1997 World Championships in Athens where the Ghanaian team finished fifth in the final. Participating in the 2004 Summer Olympics, he achieved sixth place in his 100 metres heat, thus missing out on a placing in Round 2 of the event.

Silvia Sommaggio (born 20 November 1969 in Camposampiero) is an Italian long-distance runner. She won the silver medal in 5000 m at the 1995 Summer Universiade in Fukuoka. In 10,000 m she won the silver medal at the 1997 Mediterranean Games, finished ninth at the 1997 World Championships in Athens and fourth at the 2001 Mediterranean Games. Her father Gianfranco became Italian champion in 3000 m steeplechase in 1961 and 1962.

He became Norwegian shot put champion in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997 His personal best in shot put was 20.39 metres, achieved in May 1998 in Eugene.

Agnese Maffeis (born 9 March 1965 in Bergamo) is an Italian discus thrower. She finished twelfth at the 1989 World Indoor Championships and eighth at the 1997 World Championships. She also competed in the 1996 Olympics, but failed to qualify from her pool. At the Mediterranean Games she won gold medals in shot put in 1987 and 1993 and in discus in 1991 and 1993. She won a silver medal in shot put in 1991 and in discus in 2001.
