  1. Daniel Komen

    Daniel Kipngetich Komen is a Kenyan middle and long distance runner. He is the first and only man to achieve back-to-back sub-four minute miles, as he owns the world record for two miles. Komen is also the second man ever to break both the 13-minute mark in the 5000 meter run and the 3½ minute mark for the 1500 meter run. He also holds the world record for the 3000 meters, both indoor and oudoor.

  5. Javier Sotomayor

    Javier Sotomayor (born October 13, 1967 in Matanzas, Cuba) is a Cuban former athlete who specialized in the high jump. He is 1.94 meters tall. Sotomayor set an age 16 world record in 1984 of 2.33 metres in Havana, but was not able to go to the 1984 Olympics due to the Cuban boycott. In 1985 he took silver in the World Indoor Championships with a best jump of 2.30 metres, and won his first title in 1987, at the Pan American Games.

  6. Robert Esmie

    Robert Esmie (born July 5, 1972) is a Canadian athlete, winner of the gold medal in the 4x100 m relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Born in Jamaica and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Esmie formed along with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey the world's best 4x100 m relay team in the mid-1990s. Esmie was seventh in 100 m and won a bronze medal in 4x100 m relay at the 1993 World Championships.

  7. Steve Moneghetti

    Stephen ("Steve") James Moneghetti (born September 26, 1962 in Ballarat, Victoria) is an Australian long-distance runner. He was not considered to be a good runner in primary school as he never managed to win a single medal. Indeed when he went to join the little athletics his father was told that they didn't want his son coming here because he was a poor runner.

  8. Astrid Kumbernuss

    Astrid Kumbernuss is a former German female shot putter and discus thrower. Her career started at the SC Neubrandenburg sports club. Her greatest successes were gold medals at the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Championships in Athletics, and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. In 1997, she was awarded "Athlete of the Year". In 1998, she gave birth to her son Philip, and retired from her sports career in 2005.

  9. Marius Corbett

    Marius Corbett (born September 26, 1975 in Potchefstroom) is a South African javelin thrower. He won a surprise gold medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics, improving his personal best with 4.50 m during the contest. The following year he threw 88.75 to win the 1998 Commonwealth Games, his result still standing as an African record.

    Maria Manuela Machado (born August 9, 1963 in Viana do Castelo) is a former Portuguese long-distance runner, who was particularly successful when running the marathon. Unlike many other marathoners, she did not focus on running city marathons that would have earned her lots of money. Instead, she participated in major competitions (which were less monetarily profitable). Machado participated in the marathon in every major competition between 1990 and 2000.

  11. Beatrice Faumuina

    Beatrice Roini Liua Faumuina, ONZM (born October 23, 1974 in Auckland) is a New Zealand discus thrower, a gold medallist at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. She has represented New Zealand in three Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Summer Olympics she placed 7th in the discus with a throw of 64.45 metres. Early in her career, she was coached by New Zealand sport celebrity Les Mills.

  12. Davidson Ezinwa

    Davidson Ezinwa (born November 22, 1971) is a former sprinter from Nigeria. He won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships, both in 4 x 100 metres relay. He also won a 60 metres silver medal at the 1997 World Indoor Championships. In 100 metres his personal best time is 9.94 seconds, although he has recorded 9.91 s, albeit with a doubtful wind reading of -2.3 m/s which is an unlikely weather condition for records.

    Ludmila Engquist (born April 21, 1964 in Tambov Oblast, Russia) is a Swedish athlete who won gold medals in 100m hurdles at the 1991 World Championships (for the Soviet Union under the name Ludmila Narozhilenko) and 1997 World Championships as well as the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. For her 1997 victory in Athens, Engquist received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal, the first non-native Swede to win the honor.

    Jonathan A. "Jon" Drummond is an American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4x100 m relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jon Drummond is known for being among the world’s best starters. In 1991, Drummond won the 200 m at the World University Games.     Artur Jerzy Partyka (born July 25, 1969 in Stalowa Wola, Poland) is a former Polish high jumper and two-time Olympic medalist. His father is Algerian, his mother is Polish. He is one of the greatest high jumpers of all time; he is one of only 16 high jumpers to clear the height of 2.38 m or more. With that height he set the Polish record in high jump. Known for his truly graceful execution of the Fosbury flop technique, he made clearing the bar look somewhat effortless.

    Brian M. Lewis (born December 5, 1974) is an American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4x100 m relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Sacramento, California, Brian Lewis played baseball (his father and uncle had played professional baseball) through his ninth grade, but moved then to athletics, because he didn't want his father to coach him. Lewis was the member of American 4x100 m relay team, that did not finish its heat at the 1997 World Championships.

  27. Osmond Ezinwa

    Osmond Ezinwa (born November 22, 1971) is a former sprinter from Nigeria. Together with Olapade Adeniken, Francis Obikwelu and Davidson Ezinwa he won a silver medal in 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. He is the younger twin brother of Davidson Ezinwa. Both attended the Christian university Azusa Pacific University. Osmond Ezinwa tested positive ephedrine in February 1996.

  28. Vladimir Dubrovshchik

    Vladimir Dubrovshchik (born January 7, 1972 in Grodno) is a former Belarusian discus thrower who won the Olympic silver medal in 1996. He is also the 1994 European champion and 1995 World Championships silver medallist, and he finished fourth at the 1997 World Championships. In 2000 he set his personal best throw with 69.28 metres. He retired after the 2001 season.

  29. Maurice Wignall

    Maurice Wignall (born April 17, 1976) is a Jamaican hurdling athlete. His first appearance in a major international championship was at the 1997 World Championships, where he competed in the long jump competition without reaching the final. He jumped 8.09, which still stands as his personal best. Wignall's success in hurdling came relatively late. He took his first medal, a bronze medal, at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

  30. Reyes Estévez

    Reyes Estévez López is a Spanish 1500 metres runner, who won the European Championships' final 1998 in Budapest. In addition, he won bronze medals at the 1997 World Championships, 1999 World Championships and 2005 European Indoor Championships (both 1500 and 3000 m) and silver medals at the 2001 IAAF World Indoor Championships and 2002 European Championships.

  31. Davis Kamoga

    Davis Kamoga (born July 17, 1968) is a Ugandan athlete competing in 400 m. He won the bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1997 he won the first Ugandan medal at the World Championships, a silver medal in the 1997 World Championships in Athens in a personal best time of 44.43 seconds. This is the national record, and ranks him fourth in Africa, behind Innocent Egbunike, Samson Kitur and Charles Gitonga.

  32. Tawanda Chiwira

    Tawanda Chiwira (born 27 August 1974) is a Zimbabwean sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. Chiwira finished seventh in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1997 World Championships, together with teammates Phillip Mukomana, Savieri Ngidhi and Ken Harnden. The team set a Zimbabwean record of 3:00.79 minutes during the heats.

  33. Joey Woody

    Joey Woody (b. May 22, 1973 in Iowa City, Iowa) is an American track and field athlete in the 400 meter hurdles event. Woody attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he was the 1997 NCAA champion in the 400 m hurdles. Woody placed third in the American championships and qualified for the 1997 World Championships in Athens. In the 1999 World Championships in Seville, he improved to sixth place.

  34. Rich Kenah

    Rich Kenah is a former US middle distance runner who won bronze medals over 800 metres at the 1997 World Indoor Championships and at the World Championships in Athens. The race was won by Wilson Kipketer. In the same season Kenah also set a personal best over 800m in 1:43.38 minutes in Zürich where Kipketer set a new world record. Rich Kenah is married to another runner, Cheri Goddard-Kenah. Kenah attended Georgetown University.

  35. Tom Nyariki

    Tom ("Thomas") Nyariki (born September 27, 1971 in Nyamira) is a long-distance runner from Kenya. Most notably he won a bronze medal on the 5,000 metres at the 1997 World Championships. Nyariki is married to Jackline Maranga. Nyariki represents the Kisii people, which is not famous for producing many world-class athletes.

  36. Burger Lambrechts

    Burger Lambrechts (born 3 April 1973 in Pretoria) is a South African shot putter. His international career started with a fifteenth place at the 1992 World Junior Championships. The following year he took his first national shot put title. In 1994 he threw past the 19 metre mark for the first time, with 19.06 metres achieved in April in his birth city. At his first World Championships, in 1997, he reached the final and placed tenth. He only managed one valid throw.

  37. Mickaël Conjungo

    Mickaël Conjungo is a French discus thrower. He formerly represented his birth country of the Central African Republic. He competed at the Summer Olympics in 1992, 1996 and 2000 and the World Championships in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999 without reaching the finals. His personal best throw is 63.78 metres, achieved in July 1994 in Sorgues. This is the current national record for the Central African Republic.

  38. Steinar Hoen

    Steinar Hoen is a retired Norwegian high jumper. He represented IK Tjalve during his senior career. In his early career he finished eleventh at the 1990 World Junior Championships, fourteenth at the 1991 World Championships, ninth at the 1992 European Indoor Championships and ninth at the 1993 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics together with Håkon Särnblom without reaching the finals.

  39. Libor Malina

    Libor Malina (born 14 June 1973 in Kladno) is a Czech discus thrower. He finished fifth at the 1992 World Junior Championships. He then competed at three World Championships (1997, 1999 and 2003) as well as the 2000 Summer Olympics before reaching an international final, as he finished tenth at the 2004 Summer Olympics. His personal best throw is 67.13 metres, achieved in July 2001 in Jablonec.

  40. Silvia Sommaggio

    Silvia Sommaggio (born 20 November 1969 in Camposampiero) is an Italian long-distance runner. She won the silver medal in 5000 m at the 1995 Summer Universiade in Fukuoka. In 10,000 m she won the silver medal at the 1997 Mediterranean Games, finished ninth at the 1997 World Championships in Athens and fourth at the 2001 Mediterranean Games. Her father Gianfranco became Italian champion in 3000 m steeplechase in 1961 and 1962.
