  1. Nathan Baggaley

    Nathan Baggaley (born December 6, 1975 in Byron Bay, New South Wales) is an Australian flatwater canoer and surfski champion. He is a three-times world champion in the individual kayak (K1) 500m event and has also won two Olympic silver medals. He made his international debut for Australia in 1997, initially competing in the K2. In 1999 he switched to the K1 and reached the 500m semi-finals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

  2. Henrik Nilsson

    Henrik Nilson is a Swedish flatwater canoer and reigning Olympic K-2 1000m kayak champion. Nilsson represented Sweden at the 1996 Olympics as a member of the K-4 1000m kayak crew which placed seventh in the final. His first international medal came at the 1997 World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada, where he won the K2 200m bronze medal with partner Henrik Andersson. His greatest triumphs however came with partner Markus Oscarsson.

  3. Martin Doktor

    Martin Doktor) is the Czech Republic's best-known flatwater canoer. He was double Olympic champion in the Canadian canoe C-1 discipline in Atlanta in 1996. He went on to win two world championship gold medals (C1 200m 1997 and C1 500m 1998). He was also European C1 1000m champion in 1997 and 2000. At the 2004 Summer Olympics Doktor was unfortunate not to add to his medal tally, coming in fourth in the 1000m final and fifth in the 500m.

  4. Tim Brabants

    Tim Brabants (born 23 January 1977 in Chertsey) is a British flatwater canoeist who won the individual kayak 1000m (k1) bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics. He went on to become K-1 1000m European champion at Szeged, Hungary in 2002, the first time a British paddler had won the blue riband event. The 2004 Olympics however were a disappointment.

  5. Maxim Opalev

    Maxim Opalev (born 4 April 1979 in Volgograd) is an athlete from Russia, who competes in flatwater canoeing. Opalev participated in two Summer Olympics (2000 and 2004), and came home with a medal each time. He is a current (2006) World and European champion. Opalev's potential was evident when he won two gold medals as a sixteen-year-old at the 1995 World Junior Championships in Yamanashi, Japan.

  6. Karen Furneaux

    Karen Furneaux is a Canadian kayaker. She began kayaking at age 12, and is a student at Dalhousie University. She finished in 5th place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the women's K2 500 m event, and has won two world championship gold medals, the first in K2 200 m in 1998 in Szeged, Hungary.   7. Caroline Brunet

    Caroline Brunet (born March 20, 1969 in Quebec City, Quebec) is a Canadian kayaker, who competed in five Summer Olympics for her native country, starting in 1988. She began kayaking at age eleven. She has won two silver medals at the Olympics in the women's K1 500 m event (in 1996 and 2000) and a bronze in the same event at the 2004 Summer Olympics.   8. Markus Oscarsson

    Markus Oscarsson is a Swedish flatwater canoer and reigning Olympic and world champion. Oscarsson won two silver medals at the 1995 World Junior Championships in Yamanashi, Japan, finishing behind Hungary's Zoltan Kammerer in both the K1 500m and 1000m finals. He competed at the 1996 Olympics, reaching the K2 1000m final with partner Steffan Mlamsten. He then formed a highly-successful K2 partnership with Henrik Nilsson.

  9. Ibrahim Rojas

    Ibrahim Rojas Blanco is a retired Cuban flatwater canoer. In 2001 he and partner Leobaldo Pereira won Cuba's first-ever world championship gold medal. In all Rojas won three world titles and was Pan-American champion four times. He also won silver medals at both the Sydney and Athens Olympics. All his medals came in the two-man (C2) Canadian canoe discipline, first with Pereira and later with Ledis Balceiro.

  10. Roman Zarubin

    Roman Zarubin, born 4 December 1976 in Belaya Kalitva, Rostov, is a Russian flatwater canoe racer and former world and European champion. He joined the Russian national squad in 1996 and won a total of six world championship medals. His greatest achievement came in 2001 when he won the kayak (K4) 500m gold medal in Poznań, Poland. Zarubin was European champion three times, in 1999 (K4 200m and 500m) and 2001 (K4 500m).

  11. Florin Popescu

    Florin Popescu is a Romanian flatwater canoer. He won two Olympic medals in the C-2 event at the 2000 Summer Olympics with his teammate Mitică Pricop. He won a total of seven world championship gold medals as well as seven European championship golds, making him the most successful Romanian paddler of modern times. Injury forced Popescu to retire at the end of the 2005 season after winning his seventh world title (C4 500m) at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

  12. Carrie Lightbound

    Carrie Lightbound (born August 8, 1979 in Laval, Quebec) is a Canadian kayaker. She began kayaking at age 10, and is a student at the University of Toronto. She finished in 9th place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the women's K4 500 m.

  13. Alvydas Duonėla

    Alvydas Duonėla is a Lithuanian flatwater canoer. With team-mate Egidijus Balčiūnas, he has won three world championship gold medals in the kayak K-2 200m sprint. Duonėla's specialist 200m races are not included in the Olympic schedule. At the 2000 Olympics, he raced in the K-1 500m instead, placing seventh in the final. He also competed in the K-2 500m with Egidijus Balčiūnas, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals.

  14. Dragan Zorić

    Dragan Zorić is a Serbian flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion. An international since 1999, he two medals at the European under-23 championships in Zagreb, Croatia - silver in the K2 1000m and bronze in the individual K1 500m. Zorić is now Serbia's top kayak sprinter. He won the first major title of his senior career at the 2005 World Championships, again held in Zagreb, taking the gold medal in the K2 200m sprint with partner Ognjen Filipović.

  15. Egidijus Balčiūnas

    Egidijus Balčiūnas is a Lithuanian flatwater canoer. With team-mate Alvydas Duonėla, he has won three world championship gold medals in the kayak K-2 200m sprint. The pair were also finalists in the K2 500m at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Balciunas now lives in Vilnius. He is 189 cm / 6'2 tall and weighs 89 kg / 196 lbs.

  16. Botond Storcz

    Botond Storcz is a Hungarian flatwater canoer, who has won three Olympic gold medals in the team kayak events. He has also had outstanding success at the World and European championships, winning four gold medals at each. Storcz is currently a member of the Budapest Honvéd FC club. He is 183 cm (6'0") tall and weighs 87 kg (191 lbs). He works as a canoeing coach at the Hungarian University of Physical Education.

  17. Imre Pulai

    Imre Pulai (born November 14, 1967) is a Hungarian canoer, who won two Olympic medals in the Canadian canoeing event, including a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics with teammate Ferenc Novak. As a twenty year-old, Pulai reached the individual (C1) 1000m final at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, finishing in sixth place. However, it was not until five years later that he won the first of his four world championship gold medals - in the C4 1000m in Copenhagen.

  18. Ronald Rauhe

    Ronald Rauhe (born 3 October 1981 in Berlin) is an athlete from Germany who competes in flatwater canoeing. He has won ten world championship gold medals in the Kayak discipline, more than any other kayak racer currently in competition. Rauhe was selected for the 1997 World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland at the age of just fifteen years nine months.

  19. Josefa Idem

    Josefa Idem Guerrini (born September 23, 1964 in Goch, West Germany) is an Italian canoer. She has won four Olympic medals in kayak flatwater canoe racing, and 35 international medals during her career. She was the first Italian woman to win World Championships and Olympic medals in kayak.     Adam Wysocki is a Polish flatwater canoer. A consistent competitor at the highest level since the mid-nineties he has won two world championship gold medals in the K-2 kayak.   21. Tim Wieskötter

    Tim Wieskötter, born 12 March 1979 in Emsdetten) is a German flatwater canoer, and current (2006) world champion in both the K-2 Kayak 200m and 500m events. Wieskötter won a bronze medal in the K-2 500m at the Sydney Olympics with team-mate Ronald Rauhe. Since then they have completely dominated the event, winning the major race of the season every year - four world championships (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and the Olympic gold medal at Athens in 2004.

  22. Ákos Vereckei

    Ákos Vereckei is a Hungarian canoer, who has won two Olympic gold medals in the team kayak events. One of the sport's top stars, he has also had outstanding success at the canoeing World and European Championships. His favourite event is the K1 500m. He won three consecutive world titles (1998-2001). In 2005 he won his fifth straight European title over this distance.

  23. Mark Zabel

    Mark Zabel (born 12 August 1973 in Calbe) is a retired German flatwater canoer and Surfski Champion. As a member of Germany's successful K-4 kayak crew he won three Olympic medals, including gold at Atlanta in 1996, as well as a total of six world championship gold medals. Zabel retired in July 2005 and has now become a coach. He is 190 cm tall and raced at 86 kg (189 lbs).

    Antonio Rossi (born December 19, 1968 in Lecco) is an Italian canoer who won five medals in kayak flatwater canoeing. He has also been successful at the canoeing World Championships.

  25. Attila Buday

    Attila Buday (born June 28, 1974 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Canadian flatwater canoeist. He is a student at the University of Toronto. He finished in 7th at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the C2 1000m event, partnering his younger brother Tamas.     Andrew Trim (born December, 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales) is the Queensland Coalition candidate for the state seat of Cleveland. He is a former Olympian, competitng in the sports of canoeing. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics and a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics, both in kayaking. Trim currently serves as Principal of Johnson Real Estate at Birkdale.

  27. Kamini Jain

    Kamini Jain (born November 13, 1969 in Tripoli, Libya) is a Canadian kayaker. She's of Indian descent. She began kayaking at age 15, and is a graduate of Simon Fraser University. She finished in 9th place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the K4 500 m event. She won a bronze medal in the world cup circuit in 2001 at Gainesville, Georgia in the K2 500 m.

  28. Bob Maesen

    Bob Maesen (born 24 May 1976) is a Belgian flatwater canoer. He finished fifth in the K-2 1000 metres event at the 2004 Summer Olympics together with teammate Wouter D'Hane.

  29. Erzsébet Viski

    Erzsébet Viski is a Hungarian canoer, who has won two Olympic silver medals in the kayak flatwater team events. She has also had outstanding success at the Flatwater Racing World Championships.

  30. Stefan Ulm

    Stefan Ulm (born 21 December 1975 in Berlin) is a German flatwater canoer. From 1997-2004 he was a member of Germany's successful K-4 kayak crew. During this time he won two Olympic silver medals (2000 and 2004) as well as a total of five world championship gold medals.

    Michael Kolganov is an Israeli flatwater canoer and former world champion. Born "Mikhail" Kolganov in the former Soviet Union, he took up canoeing at the age of 14. “I was a fat young boy,” he recalled, “and my parents were looking for a hobby for me that would help me lose weight.” Kolganov’s older brother Andrei was already a Soviet youth champion in kayaks, and represented the former Soviet Union. He was brought to Israel by the Jewish Agency in 1995.

    Richard Riszdorfer is a Slovakian flatwater canoer, who won an Olympic bronze medal in K-4 1000 m at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He has won a total of five World and six European titles, all in the four-man (K-4) kayak. "Rici", the younger brother of team-mate Michal, is a member of the ŠKP Bratislava club.     Tamas Buday Jr. (born April 23, 1976 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Canadian flatwater canoeist. Partnering his brother Attila in the two-man sprint canoe, he finished seventh at the 2000 Olympics in the C2 1000 m event and eighth at Athens 2004 in the C2 500m The pair have won three C2 1000m silver medals in world championships: in 2002 at Seville, Spain in 2003 at Gainesville, USA, and in 2006 at Szeged, Hungary.

  36. Marek Twardowski

    Marek Twardowski is a Polish flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion in the individual kayak (K1) 500m. Twardowski was the outstanding kayak sprinter at the 1997 World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland. He won the K1 500m gold medal as well as silver in the K1 1000m and bronze in the K2 500m with Klaudiusz Kokot. The following year he formed a K2 partnership with Adam Wysocki and quickly established himself on the senior stage.

    Aneta Pastuszka (born May 11, 1978 in Krosno Odrzanskie) is a Polish canoer, who has won two Olympic bronze medals in kayak flatwater canoeing. She has also been successful at the canoeing World Championships.

    Knut Holmann (born July 31, 1968) is a retired Norwegian canoer, who won six Olympic medals in the K-1 event. He finished his career with two gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Holmann also became world champion over K-1 1000 metres in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995.

  40. Andreas Kiligkaridis

    Andreas Kiligkaridis (born 5 August 1976 in Saratov, Russia) is a Greek flatwater canoer. Kiligkaridis competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men's 500 metre individual canoe (C1) and the 1000 metre individual canoe. He placed fifth in the initial heat of the 500 metre with a time of 1:53.662, qualifying for the semifinals. In the semifinal, he placed seventh with a time of 1:53.793 and did not advance to the final.
