    Birgit Fischer (born 25 February 1962 in Brandenburg an der Havel, then East Germany) is a kayaker, who has won 8 gold medals over a record 6 different Olympic Games: twice representing East Germany, then four times representing the reunited nation. After both the 1988 and 2000 games, she announced her retirement, only to return for the subsequent games. She has been both the youngest- and oldest-ever Olympic canoeing champion (ages 18 and 42).

    Caroline Brunet (born March 20, 1969 in Quebec City, Quebec) is a Canadian kayaker, who competed in five Summer Olympics for her native country, starting in 1988.   4. Martin Marinov

    Martin Marinov (born 25 October 1967) is a retired Bulgarian flatwater canoer. A former "Mr Bulgaria" he won two Olympic medals for that country in the Canadian canoeing 500m events. In Seoul in 1988 he was the bronze medallist in the C-1 500m. Four years later in Barcelona he and teammate Blagovest Stoyanov won bronze in the C-2 500m. At the 1996 Olympics Marinov and Stojanov reached both C-2 finals, finishing fourth (1000m) and fifth (500m).

  5. Ibrahim Rojas

    Ibrahim Rojas Blanco is a retired Cuban flatwater canoer. In 2001 he and partner Leobaldo Pereira won Cuba's first-ever world championship gold medal. In all Rojas won three world titles and was Pan-American champion four times. He also won silver medals at both the Sydney and Athens Olympics. All his medals came in the two-man (C2) Canadian canoe discipline, first with Pereira and later with Ledis Balceiro.

  6. Campbell Walsh

    Campbell Walsh (b. 26 November 1977, Glasgow) is a Scottish kayaker who won a Silver Medal in the K1 Single Class at the 2004 Olympics. He also won a Silver at the 2004 European Championships in the K1 Team Event and was World Cup Champion the same year. In 2006 he won a Bronze Medal at the World Championships in the K1 Single.

  7. Carrie Lightbound

    Carrie Lightbound (born August 8, 1979 in Laval, Quebec) is a Canadian kayaker. She began kayaking at age 10, and is a student at the University of Toronto. She finished in 9th place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the women's K4 500 m.

  8. Ben Fouhy

    Ben Fouhy (born 4 March, 1979, Taumarunui) is New Zealand's top flatwater canoer. In 2003 he became individual kayak (K1) 1000m world champion at Gainesville, USA. This was the first time a New Zealander had won canoeing's blue riband event since their heyday of the 1980's. He won a silver medal in the K1 1000m at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Fouhy had a disappointing world championships in 2005, finishing off the podium for the first time.

  9. Henrik Nilsson

    Henrik Nilson is a Swedish flatwater canoer and reigning Olympic K-2 1000m kayak champion. Nilsson represented Sweden at the 1996 Olympics as a member of the K-4 1000m kayak crew which placed seventh in the final. His first international medal came at the 1997 World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada, where he won the K2 200m bronze medal with partner Henrik Andersson. His greatest triumphs however came with partner Markus Oscarsson.

  10. Martin Doktor

    Martin Doktor) is the Czech Republic's best-known flatwater canoer. He was double Olympic champion in the Canadian canoe C-1 discipline in Atlanta in 1996. He went on to win two world championship gold medals (C1 200m 1997 and C1 500m 1998). He was also European C1 1000m champion in 1997 and 2000. At the 2004 Summer Olympics Doktor was unfortunate not to add to his medal tally, coming in fourth in the 1000m final and fifth in the 500m.

  11. Florin Popescu

    Florin Popescu is a Romanian flatwater canoer. He won two Olympic medals in the C-2 event at the 2000 Summer Olympics with his teammate Mitică Pricop. He won a total of seven world championship gold medals as well as seven European championship golds, making him the most successful Romanian paddler of modern times. Injury forced Popescu to retire at the end of the 2005 season after winning his seventh world title (C4 500m) at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

  12. Maxim Opalev

    Maxim Opalev (born 4 April 1979 in Volgograd) is an athlete from Russia, who competes in flatwater canoeing. Opalev participated in two Summer Olympics (2000 and 2004), and came home with a medal each time. He is a current (2006) World and European champion. Opalev's potential was evident when he won two gold medals as a sixteen-year-old at the 1995 World Junior Championships in Yamanashi, Japan.

  13. David Ford

    David Ford (born March 23, 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian whitewater slalom kayaker. He began kayaking at age 10, and is a graduate of the University of Alberta. He won a gold medal in the K1 event of the 1999 World Championships La Seu d'Urgell, Spain and won a silver in the same event at the 2003 World Championships in Augsburg, Germany.

  14. Nathan Baggaley

    Nathan Baggaley (born December 6, 1975 in Byron Bay, New South Wales) is an Australian flatwater canoer and surfski champion. He is a three-times world champion in the individual kayak (K1) 500m event and has also won two Olympic silver medals. He made his international debut for Australia in 1997, initially competing in the K2. In 1999 he switched to the K1 and reached the 500m semi-finals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

  15. Dragan Zorić

    Dragan Zorić is a Serbian flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion. An international since 1999, he two medals at the European under-23 championships in Zagreb, Croatia - silver in the K2 1000m and bronze in the individual K1 500m. Zorić is now Serbia's top kayak sprinter. He won the first major title of his senior career at the 2005 World Championships, again held in Zagreb, taking the gold medal in the K2 200m sprint with partner Ognjen Filipović.

  16. Adam van Koeverden

    Adam Joseph van Koeverden (born January 29, 1982 in Oakville, Ontario) is a Canadian flatwater kayak racer and reigning Olympic champion in K-1 500 m. He won a bronze medal in the K-1 1000 m at the 1999 world junior championships in Zagreb, Croatia, and then became world junior marathon champion in 2000. His first success as a senior came with a silver medal at the 2003 world championships in Gainesville, Georgia in the men's K-1 1000 m event.

  17. Ronald Rauhe

    Ronald Rauhe (born 3 October 1981 in Berlin) is an athlete from Germany who competes in flatwater canoeing. He has won ten world championship gold medals in the Kayak discipline, more than any other kayak racer currently in competition. Rauhe was selected for the 1997 World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland at the age of just fifteen years nine months.

    Markus Oscarsson is a Swedish flatwater canoer and reigning Olympic and world champion. Oscarsson won two silver medals at the 1995 World Junior Championships in Yamanashi, Japan, finishing behind Hungary's Zoltan Kammerer in both the K1 500m and 1000m finals. He competed at the 1996 Olympics, reaching the K2 1000m final with partner Steffan Mlamsten. He then formed a highly-successful K2 partnership with Henrik Nilsson.

    Kamini Jain (born November 13, 1969 in Tripoli, Libya) is a Canadian kayaker. She's of Indian descent. She began kayaking at age 15, and is a graduate of Simon Fraser University. She finished in 9th place at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the K4 500 m event. She won a bronze medal in the world cup circuit in 2001 at Gainesville, Georgia in the K2 500 m.

  22. Richard Dalton

    Richard Dalton (born August 27, 1979 in Cork, Ireland) is a Canadian canoeist. He is a student at St. Mary's University. He won a bronze medal at the 2002 world championships in Seville, Spain in the C2 1000 m event with his C2 partner Michael Scarola. In 2005, following Scarola's retirement from competition, Dalton won a bronze medal in C1 1000 m at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

  23. Bob Maesen

    Bob Maesen (born 24 May 1976) is a Belgian flatwater canoer. He finished fifth in the K-2 1000 metres event at the 2004 Summer Olympics together with teammate Wouter D'Hane.

  24. Erzsébet Viski

    Erzsébet Viski is a Hungarian canoer, who has won two Olympic silver medals in the kayak flatwater team events. She has also had outstanding success at the Flatwater Racing World Championships.

  25. Yordan Yordanov

    Yordan Yordanov (born 9 June 1981) is a Bulgarian flatwater canoer. He finished fourth in the K-4 1000 metres event at the 2004 Summer Olympics together with teammates Milko Kazanov, Ivan Hristov and Petar Merkov. With Ivan Hristov he also competed in the K-2 500 metres event, but did not reach the final.

  26. Alvydas Duonėla

    Alvydas Duonėla is a Lithuanian flatwater canoer. With team-mate Egidijus Balčiūnas, he has won three world championship gold medals in the kayak K-2 200m sprint. Duonėla's specialist 200m races are not included in the Olympic schedule. At the 2000 Olympics, he raced in the K-1 500m instead, placing seventh in the final. He also competed in the K-2 500m with Egidijus Balčiūnas, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals.

    Egidijus Balčiūnas is a Lithuanian flatwater canoer. With team-mate Alvydas Duonėla, he has won three world championship gold medals in the kayak K-2 200m sprint. The pair were also finalists in the K2 500m at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Balciunas now lives in Vilnius. He is 189 cm / 6'2 tall and weighs 89 kg / 196 lbs.

    Botond Storcz is a Hungarian flatwater canoer, who has won three Olympic gold medals in the team kayak events. He has also had outstanding success at the World and European championships, winning four gold medals at each. Storcz is currently a member of the Budapest Honvéd FC club. He is 183 cm (6'0") tall and weighs 87 kg (191 lbs). He works as a canoeing coach at the Hungarian University of Physical Education.

  31. Tim Brabants

    Tim Brabants (born 23 January 1977 in Chertsey) is a British flatwater canoeist who won the individual kayak 1000m (k1) bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics. He went on to become K-1 1000m European champion at Szeged, Hungary in 2002, the first time a British paddler had won the blue riband event. The 2004 Olympics however were a disappointment.

  32. Andreas Ihle

    Andreas Ihle is an athlete from Germany who competes in flatwater canoeing. Ihle was a K-2 kayak 1000m world junior champion in Lahti, Finland, in 1997, with partner Marco Herszel. He won his first senior title as a member of Germany's four-man (K-4) 1000m crew which won world championship gold in 2001. In 2004 he won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics in the same event. For the 2005 season he renewed his K-2 partnership with Marco Herszel, replacing Jan Schäfer.

    Tony Estanguet (born 6 May 1978) is an French slalom canoer. He has won two Olympic gold medals in the C-1 event, in 2000 and 2004.

    Mark Zabel (born 12 August 1973 in Calbe) is a retired German flatwater canoer and Surfski Champion. As a member of Germany's successful K-4 kayak crew he won three Olympic medals, including gold at Atlanta in 1996, as well as a total of six world championship gold medals. Zabel retired in July 2005 and has now become a coach. He is 190 cm tall and raced at 86 kg (189 lbs).

    Richard Riszdorfer is a Slovakian flatwater canoer, who won an Olympic bronze medal in K-4 1000 m at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He has won a total of five World and six European titles, all in the four-man (K-4) kayak. "Rici", the younger brother of team-mate Michal, is a member of the ŠKP Bratislava club.   38. Marek Twardowski

    Marek Twardowski is a Polish flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion in the individual kayak (K1) 500m. Twardowski was the outstanding kayak sprinter at the 1997 World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland. He won the K1 500m gold medal as well as silver in the K1 1000m and bronze in the K2 500m with Klaudiusz Kokot. The following year he formed a K2 partnership with Adam Wysocki and quickly established himself on the senior stage.

  39. Ian Wynne

    Ian Wynne is a British flatwater canoeist who won the kayak 500m (k1) bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. In the same year he won the silver medal in the same event at the European Championships at Poznań, Poland, as well as the bronze in the K-2 1000m with partner Paul Darby-Dowman. In 2005 he finished seventh in the K-1 500m at the world championships in Zagreb, Croatia. Wynne is a member of the Royal Canoe Club. He is 184 cm (6'0") tall and weighs 84 kg (185 lbs).

  40. Nils Olav Fjeldheim

    Nils Olav Fjeldheim is a Norwegian kayak paddler. At the 1998 European championships in Szeged, Fjeldheim won the K4 200m bronze medal. The following year in Zagreb he won the European K2 200m silver medal with partner Andreas Gjersøe. Fjeldheim went on to win three world championships together with Eirik Verås Larsen - the K2 1000 m in 2001 and the marathon event in 2001 and 2002. They were also European K2 100m champions three times (2000, 2001 and 2004).
