Theodore J. Lowi is the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions in the Government Department at Cornell University. His area of research is the American government and public policy. Lowi obtained a BA from Michigan State University in 1954, and an M.A. and PhD from Yale University in 1955 and 1961, respectively. He is a past President of the American Political Science Association and was voted one of the most influential political scholars of the modern era.

Marilyn Frye (born 1941) is a philosophy professor and feminist theorist. She earned her Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1969 and has taught feminist philosophy, metaphysics, and philosophy of language at Michigan State University since 1974. Frye also serves Michigan State University as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. Frye is openly lesbian, and much of her work explores social categories -- in particular, those based on race and gender.

William Chandler Bagley (born March 15, 1874, in Detroit; died July 1, 1946, in New York City), an American educator and editor, was born in Detroit, USA. He graduated in 1895 from Michigan State College, currently called Michigan State University; completed M.S., in 1898, from the University of Wisconsin, 1898; and was awarded Ph.D. by Cornell University in 1900. He taught in elementary schools before becoming (1908) professor of education at the University of Illinois.
- Rolla C. Carpenter
Rolla Clinton Carpenter, C.E., M.M.E., LL.D. (1852-1919) was an American engineer, academic, and writer. Carpenter was born in Orion (now Lake Orion), Michigan. He earned a B.S. in 1873 from Michigan State Agricultural College (today, Michigan State University) and later received additional bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan in 1875. From 1875 to 1890 he was professor of mathematics and civil engineering in the State Agricultural College.

- Harlan James Smith
Harlan James Smith (August 25, 1924-October 17, 1991) was an American astronomer. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of Paul and Anna McGregor Smith. While attending Wheeling High School he was named first runner up in the "Westinghouse National Science Talent Search". From 1943 until the end of World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, performing weather observation. Following the war he attended Harvard University, earning a B.A. in 1949.
