    Sheila Y. Oliver (born July 14 1952) is an American Democratic Party politician, who serves in the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 34th legislative district. She has served in the Assembly since 2004. Oliver serves on the Assembly's Health and Human Services, Labor and the Law and Public Safety Committees. She served on the East Orange Board of Education from 1994-2000, as its President from 1999-2000 and as Vice President from 1998-1999.

    Joan Caulfield (June 1 1922 - June 18 1991) was an American actress and former fashion model. After being discovered by Broadway producers she began a stage career in 1943 that eventually lead to signing as an actress with Paramount Pictures. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, she moved to West Orange during childhood while attending private school in Orange. She is featured as a character in the mystery novel, "Dead in Their Sights " by John Dandola.

  4. Alice Stone Blackwell

    Alice Stone Blackwell 1857-1950, was an American feminist, journalist and human rights advocate. The daughter of Henry Brown Blackwell and Lucy Stone, she was born in East Orange, New Jersey, and was graduated from Boston University in 1881. She was an editor (1881-1917) of the Woman's Journal, the major publication of the women's rights movement at that time, first as assistant to her parents and after their deaths as editor in chief.

  5. Treach Criss

    Treach is the stage name of Anthony Criss (born December 2, 1970), an American rapper and actor. He is best known as the lead rapper of the hip hop group Naughty by Nature. His chiseled physique has helped him land roles in crime films, television crime dramas and as a leading man in romance films. Criss was born in East Orange, New Jersey. He was married to Sandy Denton (Pepa of the rap group Salt-n-Pepa), but they divorced in 2001.

    Sarah Charlesworth (born 29 March 1947) is a well-known American conceptual artist and photographer. She was born in East Orange, New Jersey. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College in 1969 and now lives in New York City.

  7. Tom Verducci

    Tom Verducci is an American sportswriter who is currently writing for Sports Illustrated and its online magazine si.com. He writes primarily about baseball. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey and was raised in Glen Ridge. He went to Penn State and graduated with a B.A. in Journalism. After a one-year stint at Florida Today, he moved to New York Newsday in 1983 and became a columnist there in 1990. He began writing for Sports Illustrated in 1993.

  8. Judy Clay

    Judy Clay (12 September, 1938 - 19 July, 2001) was an American soul and gospel singer, who achieved greatest success as a member of two recording duos in the 1960s. Born Judy Guions, in St. Pauls, North Carolina, she was raised by her grandmother in Fayetteville and began singing in church. After moving to Brooklyn in the early 1950s, she was adopted by Lee Drinkard Warrick of the Drinkard Singers.

  9. Jamal Anderson

    Jamal Sharif Anderson (born September 30, 1972 in East Orange, New Jersey) was a running back in the NFL, with the Atlanta Falcons. He played eight seasons with the Falcons, amassing 5,336 rushing yards, 156 receptions for 1,645 yards, and 41 touchdowns before he suffered what became a career-ending tear of his anterior cruciate ligament in 2001.

  10. James Curtis Hepburn

    James Curtis Hepburn was born in Milton, Pennsylvania. He attended Princeton and Pennsylvania universities and became a doctor. He decided to go to Siam (later changing to China) as a medical missionary, but had to stay in Singapore for two years as the Opium War was under way and Chinese ports were closed to foreigners. After five years as a missionary, he returned to the United States (in 1845) and opened a medical practice in New York City.

    Joanna Cole, who also writes under the pseudonym B. J. Barnet is a United States author of children’s books who teaches science. She is most famous as the author of The Magic School Bus series of children's books. Cole was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby East Orange. She loved science as a child, and had a teacher she says was a little like Ms. Frizzle.

  12. Marques Bragg

    Marques Bragg (born March 24, 1970 in East Orange, New Jersey) is a professional basketball player who played in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Bragg was a Providence Friar in college, and co-lead the Big East in Field goal percentage with Dikembe Mutumbo in 1991. Bragg went undrafted out of college, but played in 53 games with the Timberwolves in the 1995-96 season.

  13. Ernie Padgett

    Ernie Padgett (March 1 1899 - April 15 1957), nicknamed "Red", was an American infielder in Major League Baseball who played for two MLB teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians, respectively, from 1923 to 1927. The 24-year old Padgett made his MLB debut on October 3,1923 at the age of 24 with the Braves at the position of shortstop. Throughout his 5-year career, Padgett played the position of second baseman, third baseman and shortstop.

    Shareefa Cooper (born January 1,1984 in East Orange, Newark, New Jersey, USA), professionally known as Shareefa, is an African American R&B singer.Shareefa has also lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. She signed with Disturbing tha Peace/Def Jam Records in 2005. Her debut single, "Need a Boss", features rapper/ labelmate Ludacris, was produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and released in 2006. Her debut album Point of No Return was released in 2006.

  15. Robert H. B. Baldwin

    Robert H.B. Baldwin (born in East Orange, New Jersey, on July 9, 1920) was the Chairman of Morgan Stanley when the bank was taken public in the 1970s. He is noted for significantly expanding the wealth of the firm during his tenure there. He was also appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to be the Undersecretary of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. The towns of Lake Baldwin and Baldwin Park are named after him, in honor of this service.

  16. Frank Joseph McNulty

    Frank Joseph McNulty (August 10 1872 - May 26 1926) was a one-term Democratic U.S. Representative from New Jersey. McNulty was born in County Londonderry, Ireland, but immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1876. The family settled in New York City. From 1903 to 1918, McNulty served as President of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He also served as a member of a commission that studied the municipal ownership of utilities in Great Britain.

  17. Robert Hillyer

    Robert Silliman Hillyer (June 3,1895-December 24,1961) was an American poet. He had long links to Harvard University, including holding a position as a Professor of English. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey. He attended Kent School in Kent, Connecticut and graduated from Harvard in 1917 after which he went to France and volunteered with the S.S.U. 60 of the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps serving the Allied Forces in World War I. His work is in meter and often rhyme.

    Otto Degener (13 May 1899 in East Orange, New Jersey - 16 January 1988 in Honolulu, Hawai'i) was a botanist and conservationist, and is recognized as the authority of the flora of the Hawai'ian Islands. Degener started his "Flora Hawaiiensis" in 1932, the first such flora published since 1888. He collected over 36,000 different species and preserved some 900 threatened and endangered plants.     James Allen Graff (b. East Orange, NJ, 1937 - d. Toronto, ON, October 23, 2005) was a professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto. He earned a doctorate at Brown University. John Irving, then head of the Department of Ethics at Victoria College, hired him as a lecturer in 1963. When Francis Sparshott stepped down as chairman of that department in 1970, Jim was appointed to succeed him.
