  1. Betty Flores

    Elizabeth Garcia Flores, better known as Betty Flores (born December 28, 1944), is a businesswoman who was the first female mayor of Laredo, Texas. She served a brief unexpired mayoral term followed by two four-year terms from 1998-2006. She is best known as the driving force behind the building of the Laredo Entertainment Center, home of the Laredo Bucks hockey team.

  2. Richard Raymond

    Richard Peña Raymond is a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives. He currently represents District 42, which encompasses western Webb County and includes most of the city of Laredo. He sits on the House Committees of Civil Practices and Criminal Jurisprudence. In 2005, he announced that he would run for Congress in the 2006 midterm elections, against fellow Democrat Henry Cuellar, who currently holds the seat for the 28th Congressional District.

  3. Judith Zaffirini

    Judith Zaffirini is a Democratic member of the Texas Senate representing the 21st District. As of January 9, 2007, Judith Zaffirini is the second in seniority in the 31-member Texas Senate where she has served for 20 years. Since her initial primary victory in 1986 over state Representative William N. “Billy” Hall of Laredo, Senator Zaffirini has continued to defeat challengers in her Webb County-based district.

  4. Federico Peña

    Federico Fabian Peña was United States Secretary of Transportation from 1993 to 1997, during the presidency of Bill Clinton. Born in Laredo, Texas, Peña earned a B.A. (1969) and a J.D. (1972) from the University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas School of Law. Moving to Colorado, where he became a practicing attorney, Peña was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1979, where he rose to become Minority Leader.

  5. Steve Asmussen

    Steven Mark Asmussen (born November 18, 1965, in Gettysburg, South Dakota) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. Born into a horse racing family, his parents, Keith and Marilyn "Sis" Asmussen, are both trainers who run El Primero Training Center off the Mines Road in Laredo, the seat of Webb County in south Texas.     Antonio R. "Tony" Sanchez, Jr. (born 1943) is a Mexican American politician and businessman who in 2002 ran an unsuccessful campaign against incumbent Rick Perry for the position of Governor of Texas. He is also known for his enormously successful oil and gas business, which is based out of Laredo, Texas.

  7. Raul G. Salinas

    Raul Gonzalez Salinas (born November 8, 1947) is a private security consultant and a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who was elected mayor of Laredo, Texas, on June 17, 2006. A self-styled political outsider, Salinas defeated 8-year city councilman John Clifford Galo (born (1958) by almost exactly 1,000 ballots in a low-turnout election: 9,665 votes (52.75 percent) to 8,657 (47.25 percent).

  8. Santos Benavides

    Santos Benavides (November 1, 1823 - November 9, 1891) was a Confederate colonel during the American Civil War. Benavides was the highest-ranking Mexican-American soldier to serve in the Confederate military. He was born in Laredo, Texas in 1823, a descendant of Tomas Sanchez de la Barrera y Garza, Laredo's founder. He was the captain of the 33rd Texas Cavalry, also called Benavides' Regiment, until he was promoted to colonel in November 1863.

  9. Aldo Tatangelo

    Aldo J. Tatangelo (born September 16, 1913) is a retired businessman who was the "reform" mayor of Laredo, Texas, from 1978-1990. Tatangelo is often credited with having obtained the paving of the "streets of Laredo" (a term made famous in an old western song). Tatangelo succeeded the scandal-plagued administration of Mayor J.C. "Pepe" Martin, Jr., who, like Martin's father before him, exerted vast powers as a "political boss" in south Texas.

  10. Poncho Sanchez

    Poncho Sanchez (born October 30, 1951) is a Latin jazz artist, salsa singer, band leader and "conguero" (conga player). In 2000, Sanchez and his ensemble won the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album "Latin Soul". A jazz great in himself, Sanchez has performed with artists Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Hugh Masakela, Clare Fischer and Tower of Power, among others.

  11. Rafael A. Lecuona

    Rafael A. Lecuona, Ph.D., (born June 2, 1928, in Havana) is a former member of the Cuban gymnastics team (1948-1955) and professor emeritus of Texas A&M International University in Laredo. He competed in the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires (1951) and Mexico City (1955) and was a member of the Florida State University's men's gymnastics team from 1953 to 1956.

  12. Ezequiel D. Salinas

    Ezequiel David Salinas, Sr. (March 20, 1908 - March 13, 2007), was a Mexican American Democratic state court judge from Laredo, the seat of Webb County in south Texas, known for his advocacy of civil rights for the Hispanic community. In the late 1940s, Salinas was defeated in a race for the Texas House of Representatives but was instead elected to the 111th District Court in 1950. He served in the position until 1974.

  13. Tom Dale Delay

    Thomas Dale DeLay is a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Sugar Land, Texas. He was House Majority Leader 2003–2006 and is a prominent conservative member of the Republican Party. DeLay was first elected to the House in 1984. He became known as "The Hammer" for his enforcement of party discipline in close votes and his reputation for taking political retribution on opponents.

  14. Cash Asmussen

    Cash Asmussen (born March 15, 1962, in Agar, South Dakota) is an American thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Born Brian Keith Asmussen, in 1977 he legally changed his name to "Cash". From a Texas horse racing family, his parents, Keith and Marilyn "Sis" Asmussen, operate a ranch in Laredo, Texas. His brother Steve is a successful horse trainer, whose Curlin won the 2007 Preakness race in Maryland.

He also served a term in the Texas House of Representatives from then District 80 from 1961-1963.

She was reared in Laredo, Texas, the seat of Webb County, and attended public schools there.

  19. Thomas C. Mann

    Thomas C. Mann (Laredo, Texas, November 11, 1912 - 1999) was a diplomat who specialized in Latin American affairs, worked for the U.S. Department of State from 1942 to 1966. During the first administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower he served in a variety of posts, including two years as Ambassador to El Salvador. In late September 1957 Mann moved to Washington, DC, to become Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.

    David R. Cortez (born 1934) is a Laredo businessman and a former Democratic commissioner for Webb County, Texas, who is imprisoned for bribery. Cortez pleaded guilty in a plea bargain in federal court. Two Democratic commissioners from Willacy County, Jose I. Jimenez (July 2, 1937 - April 26, 2006) and Israel Tamez, also received convictions for accepting $39,000 in bribes in exchange for a contract to build a federal prison in Raymondville, the seat of Willacy County.
