Bartel was selected with the 8th Pick in the 2001 AFL Draft by the Geelong Football Club, having been recruited from the Geelong Falcons TAC Cup team where he was selected in both the Under-18 All-Australian Team, and the TAC Cup Team of the Year for 2000 and 2001. He helped the team win the 2000 TAC Cup Grand Final, and won the team's Best and Fairest award.

This is due to him playing as a key position defender, and along with Matthew Scarlett he forms one of the best defensive combinations in the AFL.

Byrnes was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers and was the last draftee selected by the Geelong Football Club in the AFL rookie draft in 2002.
