Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science in 1969 and remained there until he retired in 1985.

He is also the founder and editor of MemoryArchive, a universal wiki-type archive of contemporary memoirs. Poe graduated from Wichita (Kansas) Southeast High School in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Grinnell College in 1984 and his Ph.D. in history at the University of California, Berkeley in 1992.
