He is best known as a member of the band Limp Bizkit, and formerly a member of the Irish-American-influenced hip hop group House of Pain. He was the frontman for rap group House of Pain until 1996. In 2000, he won a Grammy (with Santana) for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, for the song "Put Your Lights On".

His first ventures into the music world were as the keyboard player in Limp Bizkit alongside his brother Wes Borland, who was their guitarist for a number of years. Scott was replaced by DJ Lethal of House of Pain, but Scott's keyboard services were still used on Limp Bizkit's first three studio albums alongside DJ Lethal's turntable contributions.
