  1. Shosei Koda

    Shosei Koda was a Japanese citizen who was kidnapped and later beheaded in Iraq on November 3, 2004 while touring the country. The captors demanded that the Japanese government withdraw its humanitarian forces from Iraq; the Japanese government refused to give in to the demand. His captors had connections to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. He stated that he entered Iraq on October 19, 2004 because that "he wanted to know what is happening there," according to "Kyodo News".

    Yoshio Kodama was a prominent figure in the rise of organized crime in Japan. The most famous 'kuromaku', or behind-the-scenes power broker, of the 20th century, he was active in Japan's political arena and criminal underworld from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Born in Nihonmatsu, Japan, Kodama lived with relatives in Japanese-occupied Korea early in his life, and during that time formed an ultranationalist group with the intent to assassinate various Japanese politicians.

  4. Tadamichi Kuribayashi

    Tadamichi Kuribayashi was a Lieutenant General in the Imperial Japanese Army, best known as overall commander of the Japanese garrison during most of the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Assigned by Prime Minister Hideki Tojo to defend the island of Iwo Jima, Kuribayashi led a force of 21,000 men without air or naval support against the United States invasion force of 100,000. In the ensuing battle almost all Japanese soldiers fought to the death. Only 216 surrendered.

  5. Hideki Yukawa

    Hideki Yukawa FRSE (湯川 秀樹, January 23, 1907 - September 8, 1981) was a Japanese theoretical physicist and the first Japanese to win the Nobel prize. Yukawa was born in Tokyo, on January 23, 1907. In 1929, after receiving his degree from Kyoto Imperial University he stayed on as a lecturer for four years. After graduation, he was interested in theoretical physics, particularly in the theory of elementary particles.

  6. Shoji Hamada

    Shoji Hamada was a Japanese potter. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, and died in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. He studied ceramics at Tokyo Institute of Technology under Kawai Kanijiro, soon after he met Bernard Leach with whom he travelled to England in 1920. In 1955 the Japanese government designated him a "Living National Treasure".

  7. Abe Masahiro

    Abe Masahiro (December 3, 1819, Edo (now Tokyo) - August 6, 1857, Edo) was the chief senior councillor ("rōjū") in the Japanese government at the time of the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry. Against the shogun's wishes, and the wishes of many other government officials, he worked to open Japan to the West, signing the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854, and other unequal treaties shortly afterwards.

  8. Franz von Eckert

    Franz von Eckert was a German musician who composed the harmony for Japan's national anthem, "Kimi Ga Yo." Franz von Eckert was a native of Neurode, Silesia, Prussia, in what is now Nowa Ruda, Poland. He studied in the conservatories of Breslau and Dresden, and specialized in military music. He received an appointment to became bandmaster to the Kaiserliche Marine at Wilhelmshaven, where he caught the eye (or perhaps the ear?) of the Japanese government in 1879.

    Ottmar von Mohl was a German diplomat and government advisor in Meiji period Japan. Ottmar von Mohl, born in Tübingen, Germany was the son of famous jurist Robert von Mohl. He studied law in Tübingen, passed the first Baden State Examination in 1868 and earned a doctorate in law from the University of Heidelberg the same year. In 1873, he was appointed cabinet secretary of Empress Augusta of Saxe-Weimar.
