  6. Bruce Smith

    Bruce P. Smith (February 8, 1920 - August 28, 1967), nicknamed "Boo", was an American football player best known for winning the Heisman Trophy in 1941. Smith was born in Faribault, Minnesota where he excelled in prep football under legendary football coach Win Brockmeyer and then attended the University of Minnesota. He played halfback for the back to back national champions Gophers in 1940 and 1941. He received the Heisman two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

    Bernie Bierman (March 11, 1894, Springfield, MN - March 7, 1977, Laguna Hills, CA) is best remembered as a college football coach. He coached from 1919 to 1950 except during World War II where he served in the US armed forces.     Aaron Hosack (born November 28, 1981 in Walnut, California) is an American football wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. He graduated from Chino High School in Chino, California and played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Hosack played with the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe before the 2006 season.     Wyatt Smith (February 13, 1977, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota) is a professional ice hockey player who currently plays center for the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild. From 1995 to 1999, he played at the University of Minnesota. In 1997, during his collegiate career, he was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the ninth round with the 233rd overall pick. He has also played on the Nashville Predators and New York Islanders.

    Willie Middlebrooks (born February 12, 1979 in Miami, Florida) is an NFL free agent cornerback. He played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and was the 24th overall pick of the 2001 NFL Draft. He began his career with the Broncos, then played for the San Francisco 49ers before returning to Denver in 2006. The Broncos released him on August 30, 2006. Middlebrooks is considered to be a draft bust, playing only five seasons, and making just one start.

  17. Clarence Spears

    Dr. Clarence Wiley Spears (born July 24, 1894 in DeWitt, Arkansas - died February 1, 1964 in Jupiter, Florida) was the coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1925-1929. He led the Gophers to a 6-0-2 record in 1927, making them the Co-Big Ten Champions for that year. He had a 28-9-3 record at Minnesota. He went on to coach the Maryland Terrapins football team from 1943-1944. He compiled a 5-12-1 record there.

  22. Harold Paulsen

    Harold W. "Babe" Paulsen (born March 1919 in Virginia, Minnesota) is a former collegiate ice hockey player and head coach. Paulsen played hockey at the University of Minnesota from 1938-41 and was an All-American in 1940 at left wing alongside fellow teammate John Mariucci. He was team captain as a senior in 1940-41 finishing his career as Gopher hockey's all-time leading scorer, a record that would hold for the next 25 years.
