Alvin Straight was a resident of Laurens, Iowa. He gained fame for traveling 240 miles on a 1966 John Deere lawn mower to visit his 80-year-old ill brother in Mount Zion, Wisconsin. His brother had recently had a stroke. At a top speed of five miles per hour, the journey took six weeks. The trip took place in the summer of 1994 when Alvin was 73 years old. Samuel Gobat, bishop of Jerusalem, was born at Crémines, Bern, Switzerland. After serving in the mission house at Basel from 1823 to 1826, he went to Paris and London, whence, having acquired some knowledge of Arabic and Ge'ez, he went out to Ethiopia under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society. He visited Ethiopia twice, the first time from the beginning of 1830 to the end of 1832; returning to Europe, he took his wife Maria May, 1834.

He attended the common schools and Princeton College and studied law, gaining admission to the bar in 1820 and commencing practice in Sparta, Georgia.

Absalom Harris Chappell (December 18, 1801 - December 11, 1878) was an American politician and lawyer. Chappell was born in Mount Zion, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia in Athens in 1820; however, he did not graduate from the school. Chappell continued the study of law under the tutelage of Augustin Smith Clayton, passed the state bar exam, and became a practicing lawyer.
- James Leslie Starkey
James Leslie Starkey was a noted British archaeologist of the ancient Near East and Palestine in the period before the Second World War. The chief excavator of the first archaeological expedition to the important site of Lachish (Tell ed-Duweir) from 1932, Starkey was killed by terrorists near Hebron. He is buried in Jerusalem's Protestant Cemetery on Mount Zion.
