- Wang Gungwu
Wang Gungwu (born October 9, 1930) is an academic who has studied and written about the Chinese diaspora. He was born in Surabaya, Indonesia, and grew up in Ipoh, Malaysia. He studied history in the University of Malaya, Singapore, where he received both his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of London (1957) for his thesis on "The structure of power in North China during the Five Dynasties".

Li also played at the 2004 Summer Olympics, losing to Gong Ruina of China in the round of 32.

K'ang Youwei, born in Foshan, Guangdong, was a Chinese scholar, noted calligapher and political reformist. He called for an end to property and the family in the interest of an idealized future Chinese nationalism. K'ang portrayed China's celebrated philosopher Confucius as a reformer and not as many of his contemporaries did, as a reactionary. K'ang argued that the rediscovered versions of the Confucian classics were a forgery, in order to bolster his claims.

Gao Xingjian, born January 4, 1940 in Ganzhou (Jiangxi province) in eastern China, is today a French citizen. Writer of prose, translator, dramatist, director, critic and artist. Gao Xingjian grew up during the aftermath of the Japanese invasion, his father was a bank official and his mother an amateur actress who stimulated the young Gao's interest in the theatre and writing.

Jīn Xuěfēi is a contemporary Chinese-American writer using the pen name Ha Jin (哈金). Ha Jin was born in Liaoning, China in 1956. His father was a military officer, and Jin joined the People's Liberation Army in 1969 during the Cultural Revolution. In 1981 he graduated from Heilongjiang University with a Bachelor's degree in English studies, and three years later obtained his Masters in Anglo-American literature at Shandong University.

- Li Denghui
Li Denghui, was the president of Fudan University during 1917-1937. His ancestors came from Fujian, but Li was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. He went to study in Singapore, then continued at Yale University, becoming one of the first few Nanyang Chinese to ever study there at that time. He graduated with a BA degree in 1899. Upon his return from the United States, he founded an educational institute in Batavia, called Yale Institute.
