After college, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Thomas in the fourth round, 104th overall in the 1991 NFL Draft. He will later played for the Eagles in nine NFL seasons.

Prior to the 2006 NFL season, Thomas was referred to as "Tra". Tra was a nickname noting he was William Thomas III.
