  1. Pedro Sanchez

    Pedro A. Sanchez (b. 1940), is a Cuban-American soil scientist. He is Director of the Program on Tropical Agriculture at Columbia University and previously taught at North Carolina State University. He went to South America and Africa to implement soil fertility practices that were sustainable and economically viable for impoverished farmers. He is well-known for promoting agroforestry, which is based on leguminous trees as method of improving soil fertility.

  2. Hugh Hammond Bennett

    Hugh Hammond Bennett was a pioneer in the field of soil conservation in the United States of America. He founded and headed the Soil Conservation Service, a federal agency now referred to as the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

  3. Hans Jenny

    Hans Jenny was a soil scientist and expert on pedology (study of soil resources), particularly the processes of soil formation. Hans Jenny was born in Basel, Switzerland. He earned a diploma in agriculture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in 1922, and a D. Sc. degree in 1927 for a thesis on ion exchange reactions. Following an appointment at the University of Missouri, he joined the faculty at Berkeley in 1936.

  4. George Demas

    George Demas (28 April 1958 - 23 December 1999) was a pedologist whose pioneering studies of subaqueous soil contributed to the understanding of soil formation and the expansion of the concept of soil. USDA soil taxonomy was revised as a result. Born in the USA, he earned a B.S. in Soil Science from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1980 followed by an M.S. in soil genesis in 1982. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1998.

    Selman Abraham Waksman (22 July 1888 - 16 August 1973) was an Ukrainian-American biochemist and microbiologist whose research into organic substances-largely into organisms that live in soil-and their decomposition lead to the discovery of Streptomycin, and several other antibiotics.   6. Abdul Karim

    Abdul Karim (1922 - December 22 1973) was a widely published Bangla Desh soil scientist. Karim started his academic career at Dhaka University as a Lecturer in 1947. He spent two years earning his PhD in Soil Science at the University of Adelaide during 1949-1951, returning to the Dhaka University's newly formed Department of soil science. He rose to head the Department in 1963.

  7. Wade Hurt

    G. Wade Hurt is a national authority on hydric soils and was previously state soil scientist of Florida. Currently working for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the USDA, he is housed in the Soil and Water Science Department of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

  8. Vasily V. Dokuchaev

    Vasily Vasili'evich Dokuchaev was a Russian geographer who is credited with laying foundations of soil science.

  9. Eugene W. Hilgard

    Eugene Woldemar Hilgard was an expert on pedology (study of soil resources). Born in Germany, he was brought to the United States in 1836. He studied at Heidelberg and Zürich, (1848 - 1854) during which time he was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Heidelberg, 1853. He was appointed assistant on the state geological survey of Mississippi, (1855), and director in 1858. He was subsequently appointed professor of chemistry, University of Mississippi in 1866.

    Sergei Nikolaievich Winogradsky (or Vinogradskii;) (September 1, 1856- February 25, 1953) was a Russian microbiologist, ecologist and soil scientist who pioneered the cycle of life concept and discovered the biological process of nitrification, the first known form of chemoautotrophy.     Olivier de Serres was a French author and soil scientist whose "Théâtre d'Agriculture" was the text book of French agriculture in the 1600s..   14. Robert E. Horton

    Robert Elmer Horton (May 18, 1875 - April 22, 1945) was an American ecologist and soil scientist, considered by many to be the father of modern hydrology. Born in Parma, Michigan, he earned his B.S. from Albion College in 1897. After his graduation, he went to work for his uncle, George Rafter, a prominent civil engineer. Rafter had commissioned a weir study, the results of which Horton analyzed and summarized.

  15. Jack Rechcigl

    Jack E. Rechcigl is a noted soil scientist and agronomist and authority of environmental aspects of agriculture and the utilization of biodegradable waste and industrial waste for agricultural uses. He was born in Washington, DC on February 27, 1960, as a son of biochemist Mila Rechcigl.

  16. Lyman James Briggs

    Lyman James Briggs (May 7 1874 - March 25 1963) was an American engineer, physicist and administrator. He is now chiefly known for his undistinguished role as the chairman of the Uranium Committee just before America entered the Second World War and for the Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University which was named in his honor. He worked as a civil servant for the U.S. Government for 49 years.

  17. Bernard Palissy

    Bernard Palissy (ca. 1510 - ca. 1589) was a French potter. He is said to have been born about 1510, either at Saintes or Agen, but both date and locality are uncertain. It has been stated, on insufficient authority, that his father was a glass-painter and that he served as his fathers apprentice. He tells us that he was apprenticed to a glass-painter and that he also acquired in his youth the elements of land-surveying.

    John Robert Philip (1927 - 1999) was an Australian soil physicist instrumental in facilitating a greater understanding of movement of water, energy and gases and his work within these fields is recognized internationally. While Philip never performed his own experimental work, he was recognised for his skills in mathematics that could be used to explain physical processes and solve real world problems.

  19. Edgar Buckingham

    Edgar Buckingham (July 8, 1867 Philadelphia, PA- April 29, 1940 Washington DC) was a physicist. He graduated from Harvard with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1887. He did additional graduate work at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Leipzig, where he studied under chemist Wilhelm Ostwald. Buckingham received a PhD from Leipzig in 1893. He worked at the USDA Bureau of Soils from 1902 to 1906 as a soil physicist.

  20. Lorenzo A. Richards

    Lorenzo Adolph Richards or known as "Ren" was one of the 20th century’s most influential minds in the field of soil physics. Richards was born on April 24, 1904, in the town of Fielding, Utah, and received a B.S. and M.A. degree in Physics from Utah State University. His PhD thesis, completed at Cornell University in 1931 and entitled "Capillary conduction of liquids through porous mediums", was arguably one of the best known in the field of soil physics.
