  2. Celia Birtwell

    Celia Birtwell is a textile designer. Born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1941, she studied Textile Design in Manchester, where in 1959 she met the fashion designer Ossie Clark, whom she married in 1969. Theirs was an almost perfect marriage of style, and their work together defined the era. The collaboration began with a 1966 collection for the "Quorum" boutique in London, which they shared with the designer Alice Pollock.

  3. William Morris

    William Morris was an English artist, writer, socialist and activist. He was one of the principal founders of the British arts and crafts movement, best known as a designer of wallpaper and patterned fabrics, a writer of poetry and fiction and a pioneer of the socialist movement in Britain. His family was wealthy, and he went to school at Marlborough College, but left in 1851 after a student rebellion there.

    Laura Ashley CBE, (7 September 1925–17 September 1985) was a Welsh designer. She became a household name on the strength of her work as a designer and manufacturer of a range of colourful fabrics for clothes and home furnishings.

  5. Vuokko Nurmesniemi

    Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi (born 1930) is a Finnish textile designer. She joined the Marimekko company in 1953 and designed patterns for many of their printed fabrics in the 1950s. Nurmesniemi left Marimekko in 1960 and founded her own company, Vuokko Oy, in 1964. This company closed its doors in 1988. In 1990 Nurmesniemi founded a second company, Vuokko Nurmesniemi Oy. She received the Lunning Prize for design in 1964 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1997.

  6. Candace Wheeler

    Candace Wheeler (1827 - 1923) was one of America's first woman interior and textile designers, credited with helping open the field of interior design to women. Associated with the Colonial Revival, Aesthetic Movement, and the Arts and Crafts Movement throughout her long career, Wheeler was considered a national authority on home decoration. Wheeler was a member of the Associated Artists, along with Louis Comfort Tiffany.

  7. Silver Studio

    Silver Studio was one of the most influential textile design studios in the UK from its formation in 1880 until the middle of the twentieth century. The studio, founded by Arthur Silver, designed some of the most famous fabric, wallpaper, carpet and metalwork designs for companies such as Liberty's, Turnbull and Stockdale, Sanderson and Warner and Sons Ltd, all of which used the Silver Studio's designs for their own ranges of wallpapers and textile.

  10. Hiroshi Awatsuji

    was a Japanese textile designer. After World War II, he produced numerous innovative designs which inspired the beginning of a new era. His works are characterized by the use of vivid colors and daring compositions which combine Japanese traditional arts and Western textile design. Awatsuji was born in Kyoto, Japan, graduated from the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts in 1950 and subsequently established the Awatsuji Design Studio.

  11. Helen Berman

    Helen Berman (April 6 1936) is a Dutch-Israeli visual artist with an artistic style that varies between realistic impressionism and lyrical abstract expressionism. She has exhibited in Israel, Germany and the Netherlands. Helen Berman was born in Amsterdam and as a young girl survived the Holocaust. She was trained as a textile designer at the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design. While at the academy, she took extra-curricular coursework in the free arts.

    Lily Goddard was born on March 14th 1916 in Vienna, Austria. She attended the Vienna School of Art where she was taught by, among others, Professor Ernst Gombrich, Professor Joseph Hoffmann and Professor Czisek. She joined the Chartered Society of Designers (then the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers) in 1950, being very active in the 1960s and 1970s in the Fashion and Textiles Group.
