    Raymond’s engineering education at UH prepared him for managing the vineyard and winery. He says making wine is not complicated engineering, the engineering helps, but what is really needed is common sense. Working with percentages and weights, he is able to make the correct choices in adjusting the brix (sugar content) or the acid levels in his wine.

    Kevin Lee Self (1991 BSEE) and wife Elizabeth Lee welcomed home their first child Joshua Lee Oct. 8, 1999. He weighed seven pounds and nine ounces. Almost two years old now, Joshua is already disassembling things and losing the pieces; a true engineer in the making!   10. Thomas Edmund Pickell

    Thomas Edmund Pickell (1950 BS ChE) died Nov. 6, 2002 at the age of 73. A native Houstonian, he was a direct descendent of Alexander Hodge. A retired employee of the City of Houston, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Korea, umpired for the parks department for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as the American Legion.

    Michael Lacy (1985 BSCE) and wife Rebecca welcomed home twins Kaitlyn Leigh and Brenna Aileen Dec. 26, 2000. Kaitlyn weighed five pounds and two ounces and measured 18.25 inches long. Brenna weighed four pounds and 11 ounces and measured 18.25 inches long. Mike is the vice president of Cobourn, Linseisen & Ratcliff.

    Don Willhouse (1973 BSCE) recently joined the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Previously he was manager of plant maintenance and operations for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He is past president of the Austin Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers and received the Service to People Award from the ASCE Texas Section in April. He is a retired Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Rod Canion , co-founder and former CEO of Compaq Computer Corporation, delivered the keynote address to over 400 participants and guests at the Awards Banquet; sharing his lessons learned in launching Compaq, which became a multi-billion dollar company and one of the most successful technology entrepreneurship stories. He even shared the story of designing the first portable computer on the back of napkin at a local coffee shop (it was actually on the back of placement).

  21. Nelson Clegg

    Nelson Clegg “Ned” Turner (1971 BSEE) died Feb. 12, 2003 at the age of 98. In the early 1930s, he spent two years in the Soviet Union advising the government about modernizing natural gas processing facilities. At the time, Turner, a chemical engineer, worked for Burrell-Mayes Engineering Corp., which contracted to advise the Soviet government about upgrading their gas industry. After returning from Russia, he went to Clarion, Pa. , to design a liquefied gas plant.

  23. Julius Victor Tupa

    Julius Victor Tupa (1956) died Oct. 5, 2002 of cancer at the age of 71. A guitarist and bass player, Tupa performed in Western swing and polka bands, and his last group, the decade-old Sound Connection, was the first Slovenian-style polka band in the state. In 1951, he made his first recording and met his future wife at a Heights-area Czech dance hall. The Tupas were married three years later in Germany, where he was stationed with the military.

  24. Nathan Harris

    Nathan Harris (1995 BSME) presented two papers at the 53rd International Astronautical Congress at The World Space Congress 2002 in Houston Oct. 10–19. The paper he wrote with George Morgenthaler, former president and CEO of Lockheed Martin and currently at the University of Colorado, was entitled, “Planning, Implementation and Optimization of Future Space Missions Using an Immersive Visualization Environment (IVE) Machine.”

    Jack Scamardi (1952 BSIE) now enjoys teaching at his grandchildren’s private school. He worked for Continental Can Company as a manufacturing engineer, then Houston Natural Gas (Enron) and Reliant Energy (Centerpoint Energy). His son graduated from the UH Law Center.

    Earl Reynolds (1993 MSPetroE) was named senior vice president of operations Aug. 18, 2000 for Ocean International, Ltd., a subsidiary of Ocean Energy, Inc. Previously, he spent 10 years for Burlington Resources in a variety of operational and management positions, including director and general manager in London, England and general manager of acquisitions and international ventures.

  28. C. Rick Coneway

    C. Rick Coneway (1973 BSCE, 1976 MSCE) is senior vice president of the Department of Defense Services for Informatics Corporation in Richland, Washington. Colonel Coneway retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve after 31 years of commissioned service. He was also named the 2000 Engineer of the Year from the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.     Syl Turicchi (1968 BSChE) is senior manager of the Center for Chemical Process Safety, an American Institute of Chemical Engineers Industry Technology Alliance. Previously, he worked for Union Carbide for 32 years. He retired as senior general manager of Plants, OPTIMAL, a UCC joint venture with Petronas, the National Petroleum Company of Malaysia.   30. David Griffin Killough

    David Griffin Killough (1956 BSME) died on Nov. 28, 2001 at the age of 84. He graduated from A&M College of Texas in 1939 with a B.S. in electrical engineering and was a Texas Registered Professional Engineer. He was a retiree of ExxonMobil Corporation with 34 years of service, where he excelled at computer systems engineering. After retirement, he served eight years as a lecturer in applied computer science engineering in the UH Cullen College of Engineering.

  32. George Henry Pardue Jr

    George Henry Pardue, Jr . (1968 MSME) died Jan. 9, 2003 at the age of 76 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a Phi Beta Kappa, a Shriner and a “Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech,” earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1948.

  33. Louis Aaron Kronberg

    Louis Aaron Kronberg (1947) died Nov. 14, 2002 at the age of 79. A loyal alumnus of San Jacinto High School, he had just attended his 61st reunion. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific during WWII, attaining the rank of corporal. A self-described gourmet chowhound and raconteur, he was also an avid Ham Radio enthusiast (W5IHY) and renowned water colorist.
