  1. Giuseppe Pitrè

    Giuseppe Pitrè was an Italian folklorist credited with extending the realm of folklore to include all the manifestations of popular life. He was also a forerunner in the field of medical history. He was born in Palermo. After serving as a volunteer in 1860 under Garibaldi, and graduating in medicine in 1866, he threw himself into the study of literature, and wrote the first scientific studies on Italian popular culture pioneering Italian ethnographic study.

    Emerico Amari (1810-1870) was a Sicilian jurist and a pioneer of comparative law. Although of Sicilian aristocratic origin, Amari was a liberal thinker. After assuming the University of Palermo professorship for penal law in 1841, he entered politics in 1848 and fled shortly thereafter to Florence, where he taught philosophy until his return to Sicily in 1860.   3. Tommaso Fazello

    Tommaso Fazello (1498 - 1570) was an Italian Dominican friar, historian and antiquarian. He is known as the father of Sicilian history. He is the author of the first printed history of Sicily: "De Rebus Siculis Decades Duae", published in Palermo in 1558. He was born in Sciacca, Sicily. He rediscovered the ruins of the ancient Sicilian towns of Akrai (modern Palazzolo Acreide), Selinus (modern Selinunte) and Heraclea Minoa.

  4. Federica Sallusto

    Federica Sallusto (born November 27, 1961) is an Italian biologist. She was born in Naples, Italy. After high school, she studied in the Faculty of Biology at the University of La Sapienza in Rome where she took the degree with honors. She is currently group leader at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Bellinzona, Switzerland and is adjunct professor of immunology at the University of Palermo, Italy.

  5. Leonardo Bianchi

    Leonardo Bianchi (1848-1927) was an Italian neuropathologist from Benevento, who later in his career became involved in politics. He was a professor of psychiatry and neuropathology at the Universities of Palermo and Naples, and in 1882 founded the Psychiatric Institute of Naples. In 1905 he was the Minister of Public Education, and in 1919 became a member of the Italian Senate. His best known written work is "Meccanica del cervello" (The Mechanism of the Brain).

  6. Guido Stampacchia

    Guido Stampacchia (March 26, 1922 - April 27, 1978) was a 20th century mathematician. Stampacchia was born in Naples, Italy. He obtained his high school certification from the Liceo-Ginnasio Gian Battista Vico in Naples in classical subjects, although he showed stronger aptitude for mathematics and physics. In 1940 he was admitted to the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa for undergraduate studies in pure mathematics.

  7. Luigi Fantappiè

    Luigi Fantappiè was an Italian mathematician, known for work in mathematical analysis, where he was a student and follower of Vito Volterra. Later in life he proposed scientific theories of sweeping scope. He was born in Viterbo, and studied at the University of Pisa, graduating in mathematics in 1922. After time spent abroad, he was offered a chair by the University of Florence in 1926, and a year later by the University of Palermo.

  8. Enzo Sellerio

    Enzo Sellerio is an Sicilian photographer, publisher, and collector. Born in 1924 in Palermo to a Sicilian father and a Russian mother, Sellerio studied law and was for some time a lecturer in law at the University of Palermo. He became a full-time photographer in the early 1950s. In 1962 ZDF invited Sellerio, Hiroshi Hamaya and Will McBride to make a film on the German people; "Mit offenen Augen" was the result.

  9. Giovanni Battista Beccaria

    Giovanni Battista Beccaria, Italian physicist, was born at Mondovì, and entered the religious order of the Pious Schools in 1732. He became professor of experimental physics, first at Palermo and then at Rome, and was appointed to a similar situation at Turin in 1748. He was afterwards made tutor to the young princes de Chablais and de Carignan, and continued to reside principally at Turin during the remainder of his life.

    Born in Palermo on January 15, 1943, is an Italian artist (singer, musician, poet and painter).   12. Salvatore Gambino

    Salvatore Gambino Salvatore graduated with a "Laurea" (5 years degree) in Electronic Engineering from the University of Palermo in November 2001. The following year he obtained an INFM Fellowship to work on OLEDs at ENEA Research Center in Frascati, Rome.
