Beamer grew up in Hillsville, Virginia where he earned 11 varsity letters in high school as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He then attended Virginia Tech and was a starting cornerback for three years on the football team, playing in the 1966 and 1968 Liberty Bowls.

He finished his career at Tech as the school's all-time lead rusher, with a career total of 3767 yards. Lawrence held the school's single-season rushing record of 1403 yards until this mark was broken in 2003 by Kevin Jones. In the 1981 Peach Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes, Lawrence scored the Hokies' only touchdown.
