  1. Elizabeth Eckford

    Elizabeth Eckford (born October 1941) is one of the African American students known as the Little Rock Nine. On September 4, 1957, she and eight other African American students attempted to enter Little Rock Central High School, which had previously only accepted white students. They were stopped at the door by Arkansas National Guard troops called up by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus. They tried again without success to attend Central High on September 23, 1957.

  2. Paul Eells

    Paul Eells (September 24 1935 - July 31 2006) was an American sportscaster. He was the "Voice of the Razorbacks", broadcasting University of Arkansas basketball games on television and (since 1978) football games on radio. Eells was also sports director at KATV television in Little Rock, Arkansas. Eells was originally from Iowa but later moved to Nashville, Tennessee before living the rest of his life in central Arkansas.

  3. Tommy Smith

    Tommy Smith, also known as "The Outlaw", is a radio DJ in Little Rock, Arkansas. He did a show called "The Rock and Roll Breakfast" on the classic rock station Magic 105 for many years. In late 2004, he was fired for using crude language on the air. After serving six months of a non-compete clause, Smith rebounded from his firing from Clear Channel's Magic 105 with a new morning show on the sports talk station 103.7 The Buzz, owned by "independent" Signal Media.

  4. William E. Woodruff

    William Edward Woodruff was an early American politician and a pioneer journalist of Arkansas. Born on a Long Island, New York farm, Woodruff was apprenticed to a Sag Harbor printer at the age of 14, and in 1818 headed west to work in Kentucky, Tennessee, and finally the newly created state of Arkansas, printing the first edition of the Arkansas Gazette in 1819. Woodruff County, Arkansas is named after him.

  5. Deborah Mathis

    Deborah Mathis, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, is an African American journalist and author. Her journalism career began as a reporter for the "Arkansas Democrat", a major newspaper in Arkansas. She also worked in television news in Little Rock and Washington. She was White House correspondent for the Gannett News Service. She returned to Arkansas and newspaper journalism at the Arkansas Gazette as an editorial columnist and associate editor.

  6. Hazel Massery

    Hazel Massery, (born Hazel Bryan), was a student at Little Rock Central High School during the 1950s. She became famous in 1957 as the result of an iconic photograph showing her shouting at Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine, during the integration crisis.   8. Bill Baggs

    William Calhoun "Bill" Baggs was editor of The Miami News from 1957 until his death in 1969. Bill Baggs was one of a group of Southern editors who campaigned for civil rights for African-Americans in the 1950s and 1960s. Others in this group included Ralph McGill at the "The Atlanta Constitution", Hodding Carter at the "Greenville Delta Democrat-Times" and Harry Ashmore at the "Arkansas Gazette". Baggs became an early opponent of the Vietnam War.

  9. William M. Kavanaugh

    William Marmaduke Kavanaugh, (1866-1915), was a Democratic United States Senator from the State of Arkansas. William Marmaduke Kavanaugh was born near Eutaw, Green County, Alabama on 3 March 1866. Kavanaugh attended public schools in Kentucky and graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute at Farmdale, Kentucky in 1885. Kavanaugh moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he worked as a newspaper reporter and later as editor and manager of the "Arkansas Gazette".

  10. Gene Lyons

    Gene Lyons is a political columnist and co-author with Joe Conason of "The Hunting of the President: The 10 Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton", a documentary book published in 2000, with a supporting film. The book outlines a purported right wing campaign waged against President Clinton leading eventually to the president's impeachment and exoneration.

  11. Walter E. Hussman Jr.

    Walter E. Hussman Jr. (born 1947), is a third-generation newspaper publisher and chief executive officer of a mass media conglomerate known as WEHCO. He is the publisher of the "Arkansas Democrat-Gazette" in Little Rock, the largest newspaper in Arkansas. He directs a chain of smaller newspapers too, including the "Texarkana Gazette", "Hot Springs" "Sentinel Record", and the "Camden" "News".

    I am Catholic stranded in Arkansas. The horror, the absolute frickin' horror. You can't drink, you can't play poker, you can't dance, forget a lottery. However, about three years ago they did legalize sodomy in the state. So you can get sodomized in the state legally, as long as you don't play blackjack while your are doing it.
